Truth About Cervical Cancer

November 12th, 2009

Cervical Cancer or Cancer of the Cervix is the most common type of cancer occurring particularly in women. Cervix is part of the female reproductive system and you can tell by that why women are prone to the disease. It has been reported that a total of 2 million women in Asia alone had cases of it within a year and an average of 150,000 have died.

The most common risk factors that contributes to the development of cervical cancer are:

  • Sexual Intercourse at an early age.
  • Multiple Sex partners
  • Genital Infections such as herpes and human papilloma virus (HPV
  • Pregnancy before age of 20
  • Women aging in between 40 and 60

The truth and the good news is that Medical Science has long developed ways to identify women’s potential to cervical cancer as early as possible.
One common way is the Papanicolaou test, also known as Pap Smear. Pap Smear is a screening method used to identify if a patient is carrying a malignant or pre-malignant symptoms on the cervix area. Treatments are given once a patient is identified potent in order to prevent any further development of the disease.

The sad news however is that some do not have the resources, money for example, to use such medical services. If there is one reason that cases of cervical cancer are increasing, it is the lack of diagnosis with the disease and treatment during precancerous stage. Some also are just too negligent to pay attention to the matter.

It is said that there is a nearly 100% rate of being cured when cervical cancer is treated at an early stage.
