The Yeast Infection Battle

February 1st, 2012

The battle was never easy. Personally, fighting yeast infection is one of the most difficult battle to deal with. And unfortunately, it can be a never-ending battle if not treated very well as early as possible.

A yeast infection is an infection caused by fungi scientifically known as candida, thus, also referred to as Candidiasis. The infection is common in women as well as other immuno-compromised patients, including children. Candida strains are ubiquitous and harmless.

Candida is normally found in human body, however, a lot of factors can contribute to the overgrowth of the yeast in the body such as lifestyle, diet, hormonal imbalance, long-term use of antibiotics, and diseases, particularly, diabetes. These factors can cause imbalance to the body’s immune system, thus, making the yeast opportunistic, invasive, and infectious.

The different types of yeast infections include, oral yeast infection, skin yeast infection, systemic fungal infection/candidiasis, yeast infection in children and vaginal yeast infection, which is prominent among women. Though all types can be serious cases if not treated in time, vaginal yeast infection, for me,  is just as serious and very disturbing.

A yeast infection should not be left uncured or without remedy since it can lead to a more serious condition. Some common symptoms for a yeast infection, particularly the vaginal yeast infection, are itching, soreness, thick odorless vaginal discharge, and painful urination and/or intercourse. It may also include constipation as candida overgrowth can affect digestion. Patients suffering the following symptoms should go for medical assistance.

Meanwhile, like any other infections, candida can be cured and a lot of home remedies are being suggested to cure, much like, prevent candida overgrowth. One of the best remedies is proper diet such as having a regular intake of foods that are rich in good bacteria (yogurt) while avoiding those that feed the yeast (sugar).

So far, the most favorable remedy for me is yogurt. Yogurt is a lot beneficial because it has large number of good bacteria such as Acidophillus and Lactobacilli, which fight and overcome any bacterial or fungal imbalance. So basically, yogurt increases the amount of good bacteria in our body which is very essential in maintaining the amount of opportunistic bacteria and candida strains.

Unsweetened yogurt is the best option because it does not contain sugar. And just so you know, it is not advisable to add sugar because you are just going to feed the yeast. Just simply add raw honey in case you can not stand the taste of unsweetened yogurt because aside from adding sweet taste without destroying the goodness of yogurt, honey is also beneficial for health.

Another natural yeast remedies also include the direct application of diluted tree oil, grape seed extract, garlic, and extra-virgin coconut oil which all contain anti-fugal properties. Prolonged antibiotic medications is not advisable because it also kills good bacteria in your system. A proper lifestyle should also be observed because it contributes in preventing the infection. Taking care of our private parts is not merely a hygienic measure but also rid our body of infectious organisms like candida.

So whether it’s natural or medical remedies we prefer, in any infections or diseases, it has long been a growing belief that prevention is indeed better than cure.

A Little Faith is Good for Your Health

July 20th, 2011

After recovering from serious conditions, most patients credit their healing to their doctors and, some, their faith.

While prayer seemed to be an old-fashioned way, many studies have proven that having faith may lower your risk of depression, heart disease and other complications. And that may be why there were still a lot of people turning to faith for healing.

A previous survey of about 31,000 people by the National Institutes of Health showed prayer is the most commonly used form of alternative medicine. Experts said that “spiritual people tend to be optimistic and have more self-esteem.” And those were enough factors to improve your health. They said that people who pray to cope with depression and other problems “needed fewer doctor visits” than those who did not. Other research has shown that prayer lower the risks of heart disease, hypertension and even, cancer.

Here are some proven healing power of prayer most people believe in.

Inhibits Depression

A study showed that religious patients had fewer symptoms of  depression and had better cognitive function than those who were not. Another one proved that poor people living in cities who believed in God were less likely to be depressed during hard times than their non-religious peers.

Mood Enhancer

Another study shows that heart surgery patients who had strong faith were more optimistic before undergoing such surgery and that prayer promotes healing post-surgery.

Heart Helper

Experts have found that adult people who recited the rosary had improved lung and heart functions. Also, those who unknowingly had others praying for them had gone better than heart patients who did not receive intercessory prayers.
